Howling Cow Camp

Teaching tomorrow’s dairy leaders in a real-world environment.

A Summer You Will Never Forget

Howling Cow Camp is an immersive day camp experience for high school students at the NC State Diary Farm. The camp provides youth interested in working with dairy animals with more in-depth knowledge about dairy cows.

For 10 days, students will build their confidence in dairy handling, showmanship and husbandry. Activities include field trips to local farms and a tour of the Dairy Processing Plant. Camp ends with students showing their designated calf at the Greensboro District Junior Dairy Show.

What You’ll Learn

By the end of the two weeks, campers will have gained hands-on experience working on a dairy farm, including:

  • working directly with large animals
  • the daily tasks of feeding and cleaning on a dairy farm
  • how to halter and lead their heifer
  • the rules of showmanship when showing dairy animals
  • how to judge the physical attributes of dairy animals
  • learn what cows eat to make milk
  • how dairy products are a part of a healthy diet
  • learn the role of veterinarians on a dairy farm

We will visit the processing facility where all Howling Cow® dairy products are processed, learn the role of veterinarians on a dairy farm, and learn how to groom and prepare their heifer for a show.

The camp closes at the Greensboro District Jr. Dairy Show, and parents, family and friends are welcome to attend.
